One hand to hold the communion tray with attached chalice cup, and one hand to assist those you are serving! There is a fingerhold (a hole in the stem of the chalice) in which to place your finger, which gives a firm control of the paten (tray). This allows you to serve the elements with one hand, freeing your other hand to hold a paper or booklet, or to assist those you are serving.

There is also a felt bag around the communion chalice/paten with a pocket for the glass wine or juice bottle. This felt bag enclosing the pottery fits snugly but easily into the carved foam piece in the tote.

The tote has a cleanable "oilcloth" bottom on the outside (nice for setting your bag down in a hospital or nursing home). There is also room for a small loaf of bread, Bible, or other materials you need for your visit. This bag is custom made with my butterfly logo by EcoBags, which certifies that the bags are recycled cotton, made "fair wage, fair labor" and their saying is that they are "cleaning up the planet one bag at a time." We support their efforts! I sew the "oilcloth" (vinyl) on the bottom. Note that the pattern on the oilcloth will vary from what is pictured.

This set is the Trillium design (other designs are available in my shop). The Trillium is a native woodland wildflower in my area, and in many parts of North America. The three prominent petals and leaves symbolize the Trinity, and in Celtic lore represent Faith, Hope, and Healing. A beautiful and living representation of God With Us! I hand-paint each chalice and paten with the designs, which vary somewhat from piece to piece.

I love that it comes with a storage bag (I guess I didn’t read the info closely as I was just excited to get the product. I appreciated an unfinished look around the bottom (though it is finished) as I am reminded of the hands that made it and not being mass produced.
